Statenkwartier
The Hague Statenkwartier is an neighbourhood which was built between 1890 and 1915. Typical for Statenkwartier are diagional streets with big crossings and many Art Nouveau buildings. Statenkwartier is part of the Scheveningen-district. The name Statenkwartier means the states district, this because of the streets which are named after dutch politicians in 16th and 17th century. The focal point of the neighborhood is the shopping street Frederik Hendriklaan – known simply as “the Fred. “ – with its specialty shops and variety of lunch and dinner spots. The shopkeepers’organization sponsors popular events such as the Sinterklaas parade in November and the Queen’s Birthday flea market on April 30.
Many expats are familiar with The Hague neighborhood Statenkwartier. Several international organizations are located in the area : Yugoslavia Tribunal, OPCW, and coming soon , Europol and Eurojust. Some international groups meet regularly in the neighborhood : International Women’s Contact meets monthly in Museon , the International Photo Club in Gember, etc.
